CBD and THC might be the best-known cannabinoids but there are over a hundred different ones that occur naturally in the hemp and cannabis plant or that can be made synthetically in a lab. Cannabinoids are usually divided into three head groups: Endo, Phyto, and Synthetic. Endocannabinoids are naturally produced in the human body and many mammals. Phytocannabinoids are naturally produced by plant species like hemp and cannabis, rhododendrons, and cacao. Semi- and fully synthetic cannabinoids are made through chemical processes like adding 4 hydrogen atoms to the CBD molecule to make H4CBD. All cannabinoids - endo, phyto, and synthetic - activate the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) and cannabinoid receptors, like CB1 in parts of the brain and CB2 in the immune system, but affect them in different ways.
